# Legislation
The purpose of this section is to provide, in my own words, an interpretation of the legislation in Victoria. You should always refer to first sources, but I felt a plain English interpretation can assist others in learning.
It's important you understand how to [[30.01 Statutory Interpretation|interpret legislation]] before you read it.
I have focused on the three 'pillars' of criminal legislation (in my opinion):
1. **Evidence Act 2008:** What is and is not evidence, how do we use it in court.
2. **Criminal Procedures Act 2009:** How do we do things in/out of court.
3. **Crimes Act 1958:** What are crimes and peoples rights when accused.
